Tema-icons are collaborative works made by Markus and Tessa together. Markus makes the backgrounds by carving, burning, painting and sanding, and then he primes a space in the middle for Tessa to add one of her faces, painted delicately in oils.
They call them ‘Icons’ as they do not have any particular expressions, but instead reflect back to the viewer, like a moon, what the viewer is feeling. The same painting can evoke feelings that the icon is ‘stern’ or ‘cross’, but to someone else it is showing ‘calm’ and ‘peace’. They tend to bring more positive emotions.
